Laurel Township, Ashe County, North Carolina
The 1880 US Federal Census for the state of North Carolina places Worth Tucker (age 10) in Laurel Township, Ashe County, North Carolina. So where is Laurel?
Using the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), I queried for Laurel and found the result.
From the results page, you can see a map from the Tiger Map Server or from TopoZone.com.
Laurel is in the northwest corner of North Carolina with the Tennessee border about 2 miles to the west and the Virginia border about 8 miles to the north.
While I was looking at the TopoZone.com map, I came across the Tucker Cemetery. I wonder if I have ancestors buried there? Once again using GNIS Query, I found three entries for Tucker Cemetery in Ashe County, NC.
I'll have to do more research and see if I can discover more about the cemetery. Worth was buried in Utah as was his father, Moses. Maybe Worth's grandfather, uncles, aunts or cousins were buried there.
Using Google Earth, I captured this satellite image with the boundaries of Ashe County outlined.
